The Crystal Spring. A new CD. The combined sound of harp, flute and cello is heard on Lyricas new CD, Lyrica, a Cincinnati-based ensemble which includes Columbus Symphony Associate, cellist Mary Davis Fetherston, is releasing English and Welsh traditional music in fresh new arrangements. These timeless melodies range from flowing love songs and sweet lullabies to an updated, upbeat version of the well-known All Through the Night. Harpist Holly Pratt of Lyrica says, Wherever we perform these, audiences ask where they can hear them again. Listeners who cannot place Wales on the map (most know where England is!) have asked us for a recording of these songs. This music is uplifting and deeply moving. It seems to touch people at their spiritual core. The trio of harp, flute and cello is always a pleasing sound, but there is something especially well-matched about our ensemble and the music we chose for The Crystal Spring. Cellist Mary Davis Fetherston not only performs on the album, but created some of the trio arrangements based on tunes hundreds of years old. Playing regularly in the trio gave me a whole repertoire of sounds in my head, Fetherston comments. I knew how to orchestrate the three of us for the best effect. Another benefit of writing for my own group is that the other two musicians were always willing to experiment and let me work on something until it felt right. Pratt adds, In addition to her talent for arranging, Marys playing is so rich, so full. We were recording amidst continuing violence around the world, but listening to that cello sound I could be reminded that peace is possible. Other sparkling arrangements on this recording are by Cincinnati-based composer Tom Jordan, and still others are a group effort by the three performers. Contact Lyrica, lyrica@fuse.net
