New Musicians

The CSO holds internationally advertised auditions to fill full-time position vacancies.
We welcome the following musicians to the CSO in the 2007-2008 season.

Justin Bartels currently holds the position of Principal Trumpet with the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in Columbus, Ohio. Prior to his arrival in Columbus, Justin was the Principal Trumpet of the Augusta Symphony in Augusta, Georgia during the 2006-2007 season and had just finished his second season as principal trumpet of the Central City Opera Orchestra in Central City, Colorado. From 2003-2006, Justin was a member of the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Florida. Justin has also performed with the Charleston Symphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Milwaukee Symphony, and Virginia Symphony.

Justin holds a bachelors degree in Trumpet Performance from Indiana University. He also has previously attended the University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa as well as the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Primary teachers include : Marie Speziale, Alan Siebert, John Rommel, Ed Cord, Joe Ardovino and the late Michael B. Johnson

Justin learned to play the trumpet in Birmingham, Alabama. While in the New World Symphony, Justin met his wife Myroslava a violinist. After moving to Ohio, Myroslava won the position Assistant Principal Second Violin with the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra. They both spend time terrorizing their kitty cat "Bama" and studying their craft.


Adam Koch currently holds the Fourth / Utility horn position with the Columbus Symphony in Columbus, Ohio. Before arriving in Columbus, he held the second horn position with the Charleston Symphony in Charleston, South Carolina. Mr. Koch has also performed with the Cincinnati Pops, Houston Symphony, Houston Ballet, Seattle Symphony, Columbus Indiana Philharmonic, and the National Repertory Orchestra.

Adam earned his Bachelor of Science in French Horn Performance with an outside field in Business (BSOF) from Indiana University. He also attended Rice University from 2005-2006. Mr. Koch’s primary teachers include William VerMeulen, Michael Hatfield and Richard Seraphinoff (Natural Horn).

Adam, whose father was in the military, has lived throughout the United States and Europe and claims Olympia, Washington as his hometown. He and his wife Katherine currently reside in New Albany, Ohio. An eagle scout, Adam enjoys hiking, cycling, photography, and computers.
